New medium for insect cells: Insectomed SF express
Already tested successfully for the growth of baculovirus-infected SF21 cells.
In addition to the insect cell medium TC 100, Biochrom is now offering another serum-free medium for the culture of insect cells: Insectomed SF express. The new medium Insectomed SF express is suitable for the cultivation of Spodoptera frugiperda and Drosophila melanogaster cells. Whether we're talking about monolayer, spinner or shake cultures, adherent cells or suspension cells: All cell types can be cultivated there in. The complete medium is suitable for the expression of recombinant proteins.
The nutrient requirements of insect cells differ from those of vertebrates due to some important exceptions. For example, insect haemolymph contains a high proportion of amino acids. Insect blood is also rich in free organic acids. Since insect tissue fluids are more acidic than those of mammalian cells, the pH optimum for their cultivation is between 6.2 and 6.5. "Insect cells can only be cultivated on the basis of specially adapted media. Insectomed SF express contains all necessary additives such as steroids, amino acids, organic acids, glutamine and glucose in optimised concentrations", explains Sabine Riekenberg, PH. D., Head of Research and Development at Biochrom AG. The medium formulation is proprietary.
Growth rate and vitality of cells in Insectomed SF express are comparable with other serum-free insect cell media. Insectomed SF express has already successfully been tested by some customers. "Insectomed SF express is recommended for the cultivation of insect cells and for infection with baculovirus. The cells were successfully introduced into the new medium from the preculture. The infection rate of SF-21 cells, cultivated in Insectomed SF express, was nearly 100 % after three days“, explains Anette Amtmann, Institute of Bioprocess Engineering, Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany.
