Protective medium for the cold storage of cells: ChillProtec®

New medium is also suitable for primary cells

When kept in Biochrom AG's new protective medium ChillProtec®, adherent cells, cell suspensions or small tissue pieces are able to remain intact after cold storage. ChillProtec® reduces cell damage caused by cold. Cell functions are retained after cold storage in ChillProtec® better than after cold storage in alternative solutions, such as cell culture media, physiological salt solutions or organ protection solutions", explains Dr Sabine Riekenberg, Head of R&D at Biochrom AG. ChillProtec® is ready for use and available in two variations: ChillProtec® and ChillProtec® plus. The macromolecular substance that ChillProtec® plus contains has an additional protective effect on certain cell types. The medium is free of animal components and completely chemically defined. ChillProtec® is a registered trademark and its formulation is proprietary.

Cells are kept cool while they are being stored or transported in order to protect them, as cold slows down cell metabolism. Low temperatures are used to reduce damaging processes caused by lack of oxygen or substrate. It is this cold, however, that causes damages within the cells. ChillProtec® prevents such damages, allowing for significantly longer periods of cold cell storage. ChillProtec® qualifies for the temporary storage of fresh clinical specimens until cell isolation. It is also suited for the short-term storage of remaining or isolated cells, as well as for the transport of cells and tissue.

ChillProtec® is suitable for the storage of primary cells. Primary human hepatocytes, for example, remained intact at 2-8 °C for several days. The possible length of storage at +2 - +8 °C depends on the respective cell type, cultivation and the use of the cells. Most cell types may be stored in ChillProtec® for a cold storage period of 3 days to one week. Some cell types may even be stored for two weeks or up to five weeks in individual cases. Users should test the storage period for each cell type and each type of application. Cells that have been tested so far include for example: aortic endothelial cells (primary, porcine), liver endothelial cells (cell line, rat), Vero B4 (kidney epithelial cell line, monkey), LLC-PK1 (kidney epithelial cell line, porcine), and hepatocytes (primary, human, adherent), as well as hepatocytes (primary, rat, suspension).
